À ALTURA DO OLHAR

The aim of this project was never to denounce. What really matters to me is to bring back to the visible world those things that end up being “hidden” by routine, those things that are part of our everyday lives and end up not being seen any more.

I enjoy watching the intruders, creativity finding solutions that sometimes can be a bit off-key, but which certainly mend the holes. As for the vestiges, I think it is important to look at what has been incorporated into the tiles, testimonies to their history, leaving marks and scars which tell us about their past.

When we are mindful of the way, the streets challenge destiny.

The streets are made up of cats and curious ages at window sills, of bowed clothes lines and interrupted doorways. Of thirsty pots, of punctual bread deliveries, of door bells waking up the silence, of the rusty lettering on post boxes.

During my walks around Lisbon, I have noticed that there is a pattern which constantly challenges arrivals. One after another, side by side, the neat rows of luminous and house proud tiles sing in unison and that is only broken up, like an embarrassing hiccup or a violin string snapping, when an element is missing. Sooner or later, one way or another, someone comes up with a solution. The creativity is gifted by the Intruders, whose role is to restore the house proud order, with renewed shine. Over time, however, colours fade and Vestiges come to the fore, with the charm of a life full of stories to tell someone who, like me, is ready to listen.
